Ukraine: Putin asks the Russian army to intervene in the separatist territories

After unilaterally recognizing the independence of the separatist territories in eastern Ukraine, the President of Russia officially ordered the intervention of the army.

Russia crosses the Rubicon. This Monday, February 21, immediately after unilaterally recognizing their independence , Vladimir Putin ordered his army to enter the separatist territories in eastern Ukraine , a decision that could lead to a war with Kiev.

Two decrees of the Russian president, signed after a televised address, recognize the "people's republics" of Donetsk and Lugansk, and ask the Ministry of Defense that "the armed forces of Russia (assume) peacekeeping functions there" .

Of this military deployment, neither timetable nor information on its possible scale were specified in these documents. But Russia having some 150,000 soldiers on the borders of Ukraine according to the West, international observers fear a major invasion. In the hours following the Russian president's announcements, the Qatari channel Al Jazeera quickly confirmed, with supporting images, that Russian troops had entered Ukraine. 

Earlier in the day, Moscow had multiplied the accusations against Ukraine, evoking in particular the destruction of a border post by Ukrainian artillery or the infiltration of a team of “saboteurs” so five members would have been killed. Kiev had denied these claims outright, which Westerners said were part of Moscow's efforts to create a pretext for military intervention.
