México y EU se reúnen en medio de disputa por energía eléctrica

Funcionarios mexicanos y estadounidenses se reunieron el jueves en medio de desacuerdos sobre una reforma de energía eléctrica que busca limitar las plantas de energía renovable construidas en el extranjero y otorgar una participación de mercado mayoritaria a la empresa eléctrica estatal de México.

El presidente Andrés Manuel López Obrador se reunió con el enviado climático de EE. UU., John Kerry, pero el líder mexicano no parecía dispuesto a ceder en la propuesta, que actualmente está estancada en el Congreso de México.

“Creo que fue un encuentro amistoso, necesario y provechoso”, escribió López Obrador en sus cuentas de redes sociales.

Si bien no abordó las diferencias, López Obrador pareció ofrecer a las empresas extranjeras la oportunidad de invertir en un esquema para construir plantas de licuefacción de gas natural en el sur de México, para exportar GNL, presumiblemente a Europa o Asia.

México tiene que importar gas —no produce suficiente para satisfacer sus propias necesidades, y mucho menos para exportar—, por lo que el plan implicaría bombear gas natural estadounidense a los puertos del sur de México, enfriarlo, licuarlo y cargarlo a bordo de barcos.
