Sunflower oil shortage due to war in Ukraine increases demand for soybean oil produced in MT

During the war, large-scale consuming countries such as India and China began buying vegetable oil as an alternative to the sunflower oil that was traded in Ukraine.

The war in Ukraine and Russia impacted the increase in international demand for oil. Ukraine produces and exports sunflower oil and, now, with the conflict, countries that consume the product on a large scale, such as China and India, are looking for alternatives and one of them is soybean oil.

Soybean oil prices increased by almost 15% in the first half of this month compared to the February average, according to the bulletin of the Mato Grosso Institute of Agricultural Economics (Imea). The value refers to the period of the first half of this month compared to the average recorded in February this year.

The appreciation of soybean oil from Mato Grosso is due to the war between Russia and Ukraine . The two countries together represent 77.2% of world exports of sunflower oil.

Without the product available on the market, the opportunity was taken advantage of by producers from Mato Grosso who sell vegetable oil.
