Ohio makes it easier for teachers to carry guns in schools

The law proposed by Republican Governor Mike DeWine reduced the hours of weapons training for teachers and school staff.

In Ohio, Republican Governor Mike DeWine on Monday June 13 simplified the conditions allowing teachers and staff to be armed in schools . He specifies that it is the school districts that will have the last word. Unions of teachers and activists for gun control in the United States are up in arms.

The legislation, first introduced in February, was passed three weeks after the shooting at an elementary school in Uvalde , Texas. An 18-year-old boy had killed 19 children and two teachers before being shot dead by police. The shooting had rekindled the gun control debate.

Republican Gov. Mike DeWine says much of the 700 hours of weapons training, which until now has been required for teachers, "isn't really relevant to school safety," CNN reports . It targets in particular the hours spent patrolling with the police or operating a radar. This is why since Monday, the threshold has been lowered to 24 hours of training.

“Students will be less safe in schools”

The measure is criticized by teachers' unions, elected Democrats and activists for stricter control of weapons. On Monday, Ohio's Democratic mayors reiterated their demands: background checks on people who want to buy guns, a ban on the sale of assault weapons, the ability to remove guns from those perceived to be a danger, and to raise the minimum age at 21 to buy a gun, Sky News lists .

This law “will make students less safe in schools,” reacted in a press release Scott DiMauro, president of the Ohio Education Association and Melissa Cropper, president of the Ohio Federation of Teachers.

The police union “Fraternal Order of Police of Ohio” considers that with the reduction in the number of hours of training, teachers and school staff will not be sufficiently trained in the handling of weapons.

After the Uvalde shooting, Republican and Democratic senators on Sunday announced an agreement on some measures aimed at restricting access to firearms in the United States. It is a rare compromise but which remains far below the reforms demanded by Joe Biden after new killings.

'Summit of the Americas' concludes with partnership on immigration and mixed record

Described as "historic" by Joe Biden at the end of the "Summit of the Americas" on Friday, the "Los Angeles Declaration" should make it possible to harmonize the fight against illegal immigration in the twenty signatory countries. The major diplomatic meeting, supposed to open a new chapter in relations between the United States and its southern neighbors, ends with mixed results.  Twenty countries launched a partnership on immigration in Latin America on Friday, June 10, under the leadership of the United States and at the conclusion of a "Summit of the Americas" marked by more friction than concrete or spectacular announcements. “No country should be left” alone in the face of growing population movements that see thousands of people trying to cross the border between Mexico and the United States, fleeing misery and insecurity, said US President Joe Biden Friday.  Standing with the other signatories of the 'Los Angeles Declaration', all...
