Nord Stream gas pipelines: a fourth leak has been detected

A new leak was observed on the Nord Stream gas pipelines on Thursday, September 29. If Russia and the United States accuse each other, it seems certain that it is an act of sabotage.

A fourth leak on the Nord Stream gas pipelines was detected by the Swedish authorities on Thursday, September 29. It is not known for the moment if it had simply not been observed or if it is a new leak and therefore, potentially, a new sabotage. The thesis of the accident being discarded, it is indeed that of sabotage which is favored today. It remains to be seen who would have an interest in attacking the gas pipes laid 70m at the bottom of the Baltic Sea.

Russia denies and accuses the United States

Experts believe that combat swimmers or drones, launched from a submarine, could have intervened. " They put us on a war footing. That is to say, we are forced, with these sabotages, to say to ourselves: 'Nothing is safe anymore'. And so, we have to better manage our installations " considers Thierry Bros, specialist in energy issues and professor at Sciences Po. At the heart of all suspicion, Russia counter-attacked on Wednesday and pointed to the responsibility of the United States. A meeting of the UN Security Council is to be held on the issue. 

OSLO, Sept 29 (Reuters) - Sweden's coastguard said on Thursday it had discovered a fourth gas leak on the damaged Nord Stream pipelines earlier this week, after ruptures first reported on Monday sent gas spewing into the Baltic Sea.

The European Union suspects sabotage was behind the leaks on the subsea Russian pipelines to Europe, and has promised a "robust" response to any intentional disruption of its energy infrastructure.

The leak reported on Thursday is the second one found in Swedish waters, while two others were discovered in Danish waters.

While neither pipeline was in use at the time of the suspected blasts, they were filled with gas that has been spewing out and bubbling to the surface of the Baltic Sea since Monday.

"There are two emission sites in Sweden's exclusive economic zone, the bigger one above the Nord Stream 1 and a smaller one by Nord Stream 2," the coastguard said in a statement.
